Why Get Your Multi-Engine Rating?
A Multi-Engine Land (MEL) rating allows a pilot to operate as pilot-in-command of aircraft with more than one engine. The MEL rating is an add-on to an existing single-engine land private, commercial, or ATP certificate.
Multi-Engine rated pilots will experience the remarkable improvement in aircraft performance capability along with an increase in speed, power, and rate of climb. Managing the complexity and workload of a multi-engine aircraft is both exhilarating and rewarding.
When should I get my Multi-Engine Rating?
While a multi-engine rating can be added to a private pilot certificate, in most cases it makes more sense to wait until a pilot has a commercial pilot certificate and instrument rating as this will save the pilot a substantial amount of money in the long run. Students following US Sport Flight Academy’s Professional Pilot Track will complete their MEL rating after commercial certification.
What are the FAA Training Requirements for the Multi-Engine Rating?
The multi-engine rating is an additional aircraft class rating. A person who applies for an additional class rating on a pilot certificate:
(1) Must have a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting that the person was found competent in the appropriate aeronautical knowledge areas and proficient in the appropriate areas of operation.
(2) Must pass the practical test.
There are no specified training time requirements, and there is no additional knowledge test that must be taken.
